Quality At-Bats (QAB%)
Overview
Quality At-Bat percentage measures productive plate appearances beyond just batting average. A high QAB% indicates good plate discipline and situational hitting — even when a player isn't getting hits.
What Counts as a Quality At-Bat
A plate appearance counts as a Quality At-Bat when the batter:
- Gets a hit — single, double, triple, or home run
- Draws a walk or gets hit by pitch
- Hits a sacrifice fly or sacrifice bunt that advances a runner
- Records an RBI on a productive out
- Makes hard contact — even if the at-bat results in an out
- Advances a runner to scoring position
- Has a long at-bat — typically 6 or more pitches, forcing the pitcher to work
Logging Quality At-Bat Components
Most QAB criteria are detected automatically from your existing at-bat logging — hits, walks, HBP, sacrifices, RBI, and hard-hit balls are all already tracked.
Two additional buttons in the At-Bat Logger let you log the remaining criteria:
🏃 Adv Runner — tap when the at-bat advances a baserunner into scoring position, even if the batter is out.
⏱ Long AB — tap when the at-bat goes 6 or more pitches, indicating the batter worked a tough at-bat against the pitcher.
Age-Appropriate Thresholds
QAB% goals vary by age group since plate discipline develops over time:

Where QAB% Appears
Individual player hitting analytics — a dedicated QAB% stat card shows the player's percentage, a progress bar with the age-appropriate goal marked, and a breakdown of which QAB types contributed (hits, walks, hard hit balls, etc).
Team analytics leaderboard — players are ranked by QAB% with a minimum of 5 plate appearances required to qualify for ranking.
Player report cards — QAB% appears in the hitting stats section and in the team comparison table, showing whether the player meets the team threshold.
Team hitting detail chart — shows the team's overall QAB% alongside the spray chart and contact quality breakdown.
Training suggestions — if a player's QAB% falls below the age-appropriate goal, Playlytics generates a training suggestion focused on plate discipline, two-strike approach, and situational hitting.
Why QAB% Matters
Batting average only counts hits. A player who consistently hits the ball hard, draws walks, and battles through long at-bats is contributing to winning baseball even during a slump in batting average. QAB% captures that contribution and gives coaches a more complete picture of a hitter's approach at the plate.
